A Taste of Italy at Peperoncino Cucina
After a year of living in the Dr. Phillips area of Orlando, it remained the one thing my husband and I had yet to find – a go-to Italian restaurant. That finally changed when our friends Chris and Brenda introduced us to Peperoncino Cucina.
Chris is of Italian descent and grew up with authentic family-made fare, so I know any place he recommends has to be good. Peperoncino is a refreshing counterpoint to the many chains on Restaurant Row. Tucked away behind Trader Joe’s in the Dellagio Town Center, it’s been around for 14 years. The restaurant’s Instagram profile promises a “shortcut trip to Italy in each bite.” It delivers that and more.
We were impressed as soon as we walked in and the manager greeted us warmly. With almost every seat taken, the charming bistro was buzzing. From our table, we had a great view of the bar and open kitchen where owner and Executive Chef Barbara Alfano creates her expertly prepared Southern Italian dishes.
To start, we shared the Arancini Vari served with pomodoro sauce. These fried risotto balls are generously sized and perfectly crisp coating. The Burrantina with fresh tomatoes and aged balsamic glaze, another must-have appetizer, reminded me why this velvety variety of mozzarella has my forever devotion.
For my entrée I chose Cacio E Pepe, which in my experience can be hit or miss. Thankfully, it’s a standout at Peperoncino, with thick bucatini pasta and a creamy, pepper-forward sauce that has just the right amount of kick.
Brenda and Chris shared the Carbonara, one of their favorites here. Not in the mood for pasta? The fantastic menu also features pizza, seafood and meat dishes including Osso Buco. You won’t leave here hungry.
Peperoncino is on par with similar first-class restaurants I experienced growing up in New York. It is an irresistible combination of old school Italian hospitality and freshly made five-star cuisine. I’m looking forward to our next visit, maybe for one of Peperoncino’s signature wine dinners.
